Consulting Historian and Researcher

I’m a historian and researcher with over a decade’s experience. I hold a PhD in history from the University of Oxford and I primarily write about the mining industry and Southern Africa.

I provide research and consultancy services (see my services) and have led projects for mining companies, development banks, risk analysis firms, research institutes, trade unions and museums. I also regularly write briefings about the contemporary mining industry.

Almost anything that isn’t grown is, ultimately, mined and I have been fascinated by mining my entire life, by the idea of a vast subterranean world beneath our feet, invisible from the surface.

While mining is the focus of my work, I have wide-ranging expertise as a historian and have worked on trade, migration, race, colonial histories, African history, biographies and family history.

I was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2022 and was a fellow at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study in 2024.

Services

Research

I have extensive experience with individual and collaborative research projects, including company and institutional histories, biographies, and histories of individual mine sites, commodities and sectors.

I also regularly write briefings and reports on the contemporary mining industry and political developments.

Broadly, I help clients locate and make sense of historical information. My experience encompasses research in archives and libraries in thirteen different countries and I have conducted hundreds of interviews, from miners to heads of state.

Training and teaching

I provide training sessions on research methods and research ethics and have run these sessions for organisations in Australia, Britain and South Africa. My teaching also covers historical topics and I have taught at several leading universities during my career.

I’ve also designed a training curriculum for onboarding new professional staff at a multilateral financial institution.

You can read more about my teaching here.

Project management

I have managed teams on preservation and digitisation projects and work closely with the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam.

You can read more about the project I ran to digitise the Mineworkers’ Union of Zambia archives here.

Speaking

I’m an experienced public speaker and have given more than 70 talks over the last decade to university, industry, government and public audiences in 15 countries.

More details of my talks are available here.
